Mill Grinding Balls, Grinding Cylpebs and Grinding Rods

Applications
How you grind matters as much as what you grind with. A 125 mm forged ball in a SAG mill and a 40 mm high chrome ball in a cement finish mill are both “grinding media”, but the alloy, the hardness and the wear mechanism are completely different. These pages collect the media, liner and wear part combinations we supply for the four industries that make up most of our orders.
| Industry | Mill type | Typical media | Typical consumption |
| Gold mining | SAG + ball mill | Forged 90-125 mm, forged 40-80 mm | 0.6-1.5 kg/t |
| Copper mining | SAG + ball mill | Forged 100-150 mm, high chrome 40-80 mm | 0.7-1.6 kg/t |
| Cement plant | Raw mill + cement mill | Forged 60-90 mm, cast 20-60 mm, cylpebs | 100-300 g/t clinker |
| Power plant | Coal mill | High chrome 30-60 mm, cylpebs | 80-250 g/t coal |
Why select media by application
- The mill type sets the impact energy: SAG and primary ball mills need toughness, finish mills need abrasion resistance
- Ore hardness and abrasiveness decide whether a forged or a cast grade pays back
- Pulp density and pH change the wear mechanism (abrasion vs corrosion-abrasion)
- The liner profile and the media have to be designed as one system
If your application is not listed – zinc, lead, platinum, bauxite, limestone, slag or manufactured sand – send the ore type, mill size and current consumption and we will propose a charge. Talk to our engineers.
