Forged Grinding Ball

Forged grinding balls are made from hot-rolled steel bar that is cut, heated and shaped by a forging hammer or rolling mill, then quenched and tempered. Because the ball is deformed from solid bar rather than cast, it has no shrinkage porosity, which is why forged media is preferred in high-impact SAG and primary ball mills.

We forge from 45#, 60Mn, 65Mn, 70Mn, 40Cr, 70Cr2, B2 and B3 steel, in diameters from 20 mm to 150 mm. Hardness ranges from HRC 55 for 45# up to HRC 60-65 for rare earth modified grades, with impact toughness of 12-18 J/cm2 and a breakage rate below 1% (typically below 0.5% in SAG service).

Typical applications are copper and gold SAG mills, iron ore primary ball mills, platinum and zinc regrind circuits. For high-impact SAG duty see SAG mill grinding balls; for mills where standard B2/B3 wears too fast see rare earth alloy grinding balls.
